The Open Awards Level 3 Technical Occupational Entry in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians (Diploma), delivered by PPets. An Open Awards qualification recognised by the GPhC as meeting the Initial Education and Training Standards for pharmacy technicians, combining online learning with real practice in your pharmacy. On successful completion you can apply to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a pharmacy technician.

Is this course for you?

This is the qualification that turns pharmacy experience into a registered profession. It suits you if you are working in a UK pharmacy (community or hospital) and want to progress beyond dispensing support into a role with real clinical responsibility: accuracy checking, medicines reconciliation, running services, and one day leading a team.

What you'll need to start

• A pharmacy placement. The qualification includes work-based practice and assessment, so you need to be working in a UK pharmacy with your employer’s support. Not in a pharmacy role yet? Apply anyway and tick the box on the form — we may be able to help you find a placement.
• A workplace supervisor. A pharmacist or registered pharmacy technician who can oversee your practice.
• GCSE English and maths at grade 4/C or above, or an accepted equivalent such as Functional Skills Level 2. A Level 2 science qualification is recommended but not required.
• Qualified outside the UK? You will need a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability and your original certificates or transcript. The Statement confirms your qualification sits at the right level; your certificates show the subjects and grades. We need both. Send them with your application if you can — if your ENIC Statement is still being processed, apply anyway and email it to admin@ppets.co.uk when it arrives. We can interview you while you wait; we just can’t confirm your place until it’s in. If that feels like a lot, sitting Functional Skills Level 2 in English and maths here in the UK is often quicker and cheaper, and removes any doubt.
• A good-character check and a health check. Both are part of enrolment on a qualification that leads to professional registration. We’ll guide you through them.
• To be free on Thursday evenings. The live class runs every Thursday at 7pm online and attendance is expected, so check it works with your rota before you apply.
• A short admission interview. After you apply, we’ll invite you to a brief online interview so we can check the course is right for you before making an offer.

Every module is written and clinically reviewed against current UK practice: the BNF, GPhC standards, and the latest legislation, including the 2025 supervision changes that are reshaping what pharmacy technicians can do.

How it works

1. Learn online, at your pace

   Structured e-learning modules built by PPets, with interactive scenarios, quizzes and progress tracking. Study around your shifts, on any device — backed up by a live class every Thursday at 7pm.

2. Practise at work

   You apply what you learn in your own pharmacy, building a portfolio of real evidence with support from your workplace supervisor.

3. Be assessed and supported throughout

   Your PPets assessor reviews your evidence, observes your practice, and keeps you on track. You are never left to figure it out alone.

4. Qualify and register

   Complete the diploma and you can apply to the GPhC to join the register as a pharmacy technician, a protected professional title.

Why train with PPets

Does this course lead to GPhC registration?

Yes — this is the point of the qualification, and it is the question most people are really asking when they search for a pharmacy technician course. “Pharmacy technician” is a protected title in Great Britain: you can only use it once you are on the General Pharmaceutical Council register. Here is the full route, and where this pharmacy technician training sits in it.

1. Meet the entry requirements. GCSE English and maths at grade 4/C or equivalent. No degree, no A-levels.
2. Be working in a UK pharmacy. Community or hospital. The pharmacy technician qualification is assessed on real practice, so the job and the course run together.
3. Complete this Level 3 pharmacy technician diploma. Around 24 months. The Open Awards Level 3 Technical Occupational Entry in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians (Diploma), 610/4031/9, is recognised by the GPhC as meeting the Initial Education and Training Standards for pharmacy technicians. It integrates the knowledge and the two years of work-based experience the GPhC requires.
4. Apply to the GPhC. On successful completion, and subject to the GPhC’s own registration and fitness-to-practise requirements, you apply to join the register.
5. Use the title. Once registered you are a pharmacy technician, and can go on to accuracy checking, specialist clinical roles, education and management posts.

Two things worth being clear about. We are the training provider; the qualification is awarded by Open Awards; registration is granted by the GPhC, which is a separate body with its own requirements. And no provider — us included — can guarantee your registration, because that decision is the GPhC’s alone.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the pharmacy technician course take?

Around 24 months alongside your job. That is set by the qualification itself — it requires two years of work-based experience — not by how fast you study. Your assessor agrees a personal plan with you at induction, and how quickly you build your evidence affects the detail rather than the overall length.

Do I need to already work in a pharmacy?

You need to be working in a UK pharmacy by the time assessment begins, because the qualification is assessed on real practice with your employer's support. You can still apply if you are not in a pharmacy yet — tick the box on the application form and we will talk through finding you a placement, though we cannot guarantee one. Is this qualification recognised by the GPhC?

Yes. On successful completion, subject to the GPhC's registration requirements, you can apply to register as a pharmacy technician.

How much does the pharmacy technician course cost?

Can I study to be a pharmacy technician online?

The taught part is online — a live class every Thursday evening plus unlimited one-to-one sessions booked whenever suits you. The assessment cannot be done online: your assessor visits your pharmacy in person to observe you working. Who awards the qualification?

Open Awards, a national awarding organisation. PPets is an approved Open Awards centre. The pharmacy technician diploma carries qualification number 610/4031/9 and you can look it up on the Open Awards register yourself.

What qualifications do I need to start?

GCSE English and maths at grade 4/C or above, or an accepted equivalent such as Functional Skills Level 2. A Level 2 science qualification is recommended but not required. You will also complete a good-character check and a health check, both standard for a qualification leading to professional registration.

My qualifications are from outside the UK. What do I need?

Two things, and we need both with your application. First, a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability, which is the recognised way to show an overseas qualification is comparable to a UK one. Second, your original certificates or transcript, because the ENIC Statement deliberately does not comment on grades or subjects — your certificates are what show you have English and maths at the right grade. There is a fee for the ENIC Statement and it takes time to come through, so start it early. Many applicants find it quicker and cheaper to sit Functional Skills Level 2 in English and maths in the UK instead, which needs no comparability check at all. Do I need my employer to fund it?

No. This is a direct route to the pharmacy technician qualification, open to anyone working in a UK pharmacy who meets the entry requirements, whoever they work for. You can fund it yourself — here is what that involves.

Are there exams?

No written exams. You are assessed on the work you already do — a portfolio of work-based evidence, professional discussions with your assessor, and three in-person workplace observations, all externally verified by Open Awards.

Can my employer put several staff through at once?
